The Poinsettia

Who was the person in your family that LOVED Christmas? That person for me was my Aunt Linda who passed away in 2014. She never had any children of her own and never had a job. Her only job was to inspire, love, and educate her nieces and nephews.

As I sit down to write this blog, I’m reminded of how she would decorate the house for Christmas–she was the original Martha Stewart! The front door, end tables, and coffee table would be wrapped in gift paper and adorned with poinsettias. She played Christmas music, and taught us all the words to each and every traditional Christmas song–this was long before being able to download the lyrics off the internet! Before you even entered the house, decorations were outside, and you immediately caught the Christmas spirit.

Every year, our family tradition included watching Charlie Brown Christmas, The Grinch that Stole Christmas, A Christmas Story, and ANYTHING else Christmasy that came on regular television (we didn’t have cable). We’d save our allowance, and she’d take us to buy Christmas presents for our parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles. We’d volunteer at the church to help out with the bake sale. But the most important of all, was all of her nieces and nephews getting together on Christmas Eve to bake cookies. And before going to Midnight Mass, we’d get to open ONE present from under the Christmas tree!

In the end, I never was told Santa was or wasn’t real. But from going through all the motions with my aunt; I learned that the Christmas season is about opening your heart and being loving and kind.
